Claire Metcalf, award winning stylist and cookbook editor, and I have embarked on a kids cooking campaign called “Real Food Fast”. Our aim is to see kids gain confidence in the kitchen and form a greater understanding of how simple and fun it is to make good food from scratch – an important step in forming life-long, healthy eating habits. We recently presented our “Real Food Fast” cooking show to the kids at Dalkeith Primary School. We kept them entertained by demonstrating, with the help of some students, our “Furious Five”, five snacks cooked from scratch using real ingredients. We wanted to prove how quick and easy it is to cook these alternatives to their overly processed, readily available, shop bought snack counterparts.

Richmond Primary School Masterclass August 2011

I recently had a great opportunity to teach the kids at Richmond Primary School how to cook from scratch. It’s a great concept that a friend of mine, Claire Metcalf and I have been working on where we visit schools and put on a cooking show. We want to send a very positive message for kids to eat freshly cooked foods as opposed to eating overly processed ones. We keep it fun and light hearted by demonstrating how easy it is to cook from scratch. The kids at Richmond really enjoyed the show as there was plenty of interaction and they even got a little taster of the food along with the recipes.

Bertram Primary Cooking Workshops August 2011

Stephanie Alexander is running a kitchen garden program throughout Australia. It’s a great initiative where schools apply for government assistance to set up school based gardens and kitchens. The kids learn how to grow, harvest and cook all types of fruits and vegetables. Deputy Principal, Jane Weir of Bertram Primary School, has been a great ambassador for the program. Jane invited me to do a four week workshop for parents and their kids. The first two weeks were an absolute crack-up. There were 19 parent and child couples, who were all very enthusiastic to cook. I prepared a three course menu for the workshop which I thought I was going to demonstrate.
